Technical support and service desk interviews test two things: whether you can solve basic computer problems and whether you can stay calm and clear while talking to a stranger. This guide covers the questions that come up most often in L1 support rounds, and how to answer them.

What interviewers look for

  • Clear spoken English and a polite tone.
  • A logical, step-by-step approach to problems.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows, networking and common hardware.
  • Willingness to learn and to follow a process.
  • Comfort with shifts, which is why you should also read our night shift guide.

Common technical questions

What will you check if a computer will not start? Check power and cables, the display, listen for beeps, try a different outlet, remove external devices, and then look at boot errors.

A user cannot connect to Wi-Fi. What do you do? Confirm Wi-Fi is on and airplane mode is off, restart the adapter or router, forget and rejoin the network, check the IP settings, and try another device to see whether the problem is the network or the laptop.

What is an IP address, and what is DHCP? An IP address identifies a device on a network. DHCP assigns addresses automatically so you do not set them by hand.

What is a driver? Software that lets the operating system communicate with hardware such as a printer or graphics card.

How do you fix a printer that is not printing? Check power and connection, clear the queue, make sure the right printer is selected, restart the spooler service, and reinstall the driver if needed.

Common behavioural questions

  • How would you handle an angry customer? Listen without interrupting, apologise for the inconvenience, repeat the issue to confirm, then explain your next step and a time frame.
  • What does First Call Resolution mean? Solving the issue in the first contact, without a callback or escalation.
  • When do you escalate? When the issue is beyond your access or knowledge, or the process says so, after you have noted the troubleshooting you already did.
  • Why do you want this job? Link your interest in helping people with your interest in technology.

A quick troubleshooting checklist

  1. Ask what changed recently.
  2. Reproduce or confirm the symptom.
  3. Start with the simplest fix, such as a restart or checking cables.
  4. Test after every change.
  5. Document what you did in the ticket.

More technical questions to practise

What is the difference between RAM and storage? RAM is temporary working memory used by running programs. Storage, such as an SSD or hard disk, keeps files permanently.

How do you check which program is slowing a PC? Open Task Manager, look at CPU, memory and disk columns, end the stuck process if safe, and check startup programs for things that load every time.

What is the difference between a restart and a shutdown in Windows? Restart reloads the system fully. A normal shutdown can use fast start-up, which keeps some state saved, so a full restart is often better for fixing odd problems.

What does a DNS server do? It translates a website name into an IP address. If DNS fails, websites may not open even though the internet is connected.

What is the difference between LAN and Wi-Fi? LAN usually means a wired network, while Wi-Fi is wireless. Wired connections are normally more stable.

How do you reset a forgotten password? Follow the approved process, confirm the user's identity as per policy, use the self-service or admin reset tool and ask the user to change the temporary password at first login.

Name some ticketing tools you know. ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, Freshdesk and Zendesk are common. If you have not used them, explain that you understand what a ticket needs: a clear summary, steps taken, status and priority.

How to structure a spoken answer

Technical interviews reward clear thinking. Use a simple pattern when answering:

  1. Clarify. Ask one question to understand the problem, for example, whether it started recently.
  2. Explain your plan. "First I would check connectivity, then the settings, then the driver."
  3. Walk through the steps. Mention actual actions and what you expect to see.
  4. Close the loop. Say how you would confirm the issue is fixed and document it.

If you do not know an answer, say so, and describe how you would find it. Honesty and a method score higher than guessing.

Communication skills matter as much as technical ones

Support is a voice-based job for many companies, so interviewers listen closely to how you speak.

  • Speak at a steady pace and avoid filler words.
  • Use simple words. Replace jargon with plain language when explaining to a user.
  • Confirm understanding by repeating the problem back.
  • Stay positive, and say "I will help you with this" rather than "this is not possible".
  • Practise with a friend on a phone call, because audio quality hides your facial expressions.

Many companies also run a short typing or voice assessment, and a version and accent round for US-process roles. Practise speaking clearly instead of trying to sound foreign.

Sample answer: handling an angry customer

"First, I would let the customer finish speaking without interrupting. Then I would apologise for the trouble and repeat the problem to show that I understood it. I would tell them what I am going to check and how long it should take, and give regular updates. If it needs escalation, I would explain the next step honestly and make sure the ticket has all the details, so that they do not have to repeat themselves."

Notice that the answer shows empathy, a process, and ownership, which are the three things an interviewer wants to hear.

Questions you can ask the interviewer

  • What does the training period look like?
  • What are the shift timings and week offs?
  • How is performance measured in the first three months?
  • What are the growth paths after one year in this team?

Good questions show that you are serious. Pair this guide with the night shift guide to decide whether a given role suits you.
